FAQ
common questions
everything we get asked most. if your question isn't here, try the help centre or open in-app chat.
-
what is the NBN?
the national broadband network (NBN) is australia's wholesale fixed-line internet infrastructure, run by nbn co. retailers like sprfst buy wholesale access and sell it to you. the quality of your connection depends on which nbn technology type serves your address — FTTP, FTTC, FTTN, HFC, or Fixed Wireless.
-
how do i transfer from my current ISP?
sign up with us and pick an activation date. we handle the transfer — your current connection usually stays active until the day we take over. most transfers complete within 1–3 business days. you don't need to call anyone.
-
do i need a new modem?
most standard NBN-compatible modems work with sprfst. if you're on FTTP or HFC you need a router with a WAN/ethernet port. for FTTN you need a VDSL2-capable modem. if you're unsure, our help articles cover the most common models.
-
are there contracts?
no. all plans are month-to-month. you can cancel any time, no cancellation fee. if you cancel mid-month you're charged only for days used.
-
what if i need help urgently?
we have in-app chat for live support, plus a status page at status.sprfst.com.au. most issues are resolved in under two hours during business hours. if there's a widespread outage we post updates to the status page automatically. we don't take phone calls — that's how we keep prices low.
-
can i bring my own modem?
yes. after signing up we'll provide your connection credentials (username, password, and VCI/VPI if applicable). our help centre has setup guides for most popular router models.
-
can i get a static IP address?
we assign a dynamic IP by default. static IP is available as an add-on for $5/month and can be requested from the app after your service is active.
-
do you offer business plans?
not at this time. sprfst is residential-only. if you need a business-grade SLA, dedicated bandwidth, or multiple services under one account, we're not the right fit yet.
-
can i upgrade or downgrade my plan?
yes, any time from the app. plan changes take effect at the start of your next billing cycle. if you're upgrading to Home Ultrafast, Elite Ultrafast, or Elite Hyperfast, we'll first confirm your address has FTTP — those plans require a fibre-to-the-premises connection.
-
how do i know what NBN type is at my address?
enter your address on our coverage page and we'll show you which NBN technology serves it. you can also find this in your NBN co service qualification letter, or check the nbn co website directly.
-
what happens when my connection drops out?
first check status.sprfst.com.au for any active network incidents. if there's no outage listed, try rebooting your modem (unplug, wait 30 seconds, plug back in). if that doesn't fix it, open in-app chat and we can run a line test and escalate to nbn co if needed.
-
is there a setup fee?
no setup fees, no activation fees. you pay your first month's plan cost when you sign up, and that's it. if a technician visit from nbn co is required for a new connection, that's covered — there's no charge passed on to you.
-
how long does activation take?
transfers from another provider typically take 1–3 business days. new connections (where NBN hasn't been active at your address before) can take 2–5 business days, and may require an nbn co technician visit. we'll confirm your activation date when you sign up.
-
can i move my service to a new address?
yes. open the app and go to Account → Move service at least 5 business days before your move date. we'll check availability at the new address and arrange the transfer. if your current plan isn't available at the new address (e.g. FTTP-only plans at an FTTN address) we'll let you know before the move.
-
what is the Elite tier?
Elite plans include an enhanced SLA (eSLA) — a guaranteed fault response time. Bronze eSLA (Elite Standard, Elite Fast) targets resolution within 12 hours. Gold eSLA (Elite Superfast, Elite Ultrafast, Elite Hyperfast) targets resolution within 4 hours. Speeds and prices are different to the Home tier. See the plans page for a full comparison.
-
why is my speed slower in the evening?
the NBN is a shared network. during peak hours (roughly 6pm–11pm) more people are online simultaneously, which can reduce speeds. we publish our typical evening speeds on the plans page — these are measured during peak hours and are the most realistic indicator of what you'll experience day-to-day.
