dynamic vs static IP
By default, sprfst assigns you a dynamic IP address — it can change periodically (typically when your modem reboots or your session reconnects). For most households, this makes no practical difference.
A static IP is a fixed address that never changes. It’s assigned to your account and stays the same regardless of reboots or reconnections.
do you need a static IP?
Most people don’t. You might need one if you:
- Run a server at home (web, game, media) that needs to be reachable from the internet at a consistent address
- Use a VPN that requires a fixed endpoint
- Access your home network remotely via a fixed IP (rather than a dynamic DNS service)
- Have equipment or software that requires a fixed external IP to function
If you only want to do remote desktop or access home cameras, a dynamic DNS (DDNS) service is often a simpler and free alternative.
adding a static IP
Static IP is available on any plan for $5/month.
- Open the sprfst app
- Go to Account → Add-ons
- Select Static IP
- Confirm — the add-on is active within a few minutes
Your static IP address will be shown in Account → Connection details.
removing a static IP
Go to Account → Add-ons and remove the Static IP add-on. Your connection will revert to dynamic IP at the next reconnection. The $5/month charge stops at the end of your current billing cycle.
IPv4 vs IPv6
The static IP add-on provides a dedicated IPv4 address. IPv6 is provided natively on all sprfst plans at no extra charge — most modern devices use it automatically alongside IPv4.
